Historically, Manitoba has been known as the Keystone Province. The reference is credited to Lord Dufferin in an 1877 speech in Winnipeg. Lord Dufferin, then Governor General of Canada, stated, "Manitoba is destined to be the keystone of a mighty arch of sister provinces stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific".
